John Paul II Park – Gdańsk

John Paul II Park in Gdańsk is a vast green space covering approximately twenty-five hectares, located in the Zaspa district. It was created on an undeveloped section of the former airport in the Wrzeszcz district, between Jana Pawła II Avenue, Rzeczypospolitej Avenue, Meissnera Street, and the Przymorze housing estate. In the past, this area was covered by a pine forest, through which the Brzeźnieński Stream flowed.

Unique in the park: The park has exceptional historical and symbolic significance. In June 1987, Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass for working people here, attended by approximately six hundred thousand people. To commemorate this event, the park was named after him, and in place of the papal ship-shaped altar, the so-called Green Monument to John Paul II, designed by Marian Kołodziej and Lech Zaleski, was erected.
