Ornithological Tower on Pirate Mountain – Krynica Morska
Drapolicz – a place where learning meets the tranquillity of nature
On the Vistula Spit, in Krynica Morska, there are two unique places that combine science, education and contact with nature. Drapolicz Association has been conducting research on bird migration here for years, while also creating a space for rest, learning and mindful engagement with nature. These are places that attract not only ornithologists, but also anyone looking for a moment of peace, fresh air and distance from everyday life.
- Ornithological Tower on Pirate Mountain
On a hill called Pirate Mountain in Krynica Morska stands the Drapolicz Ornithological Tower , a structure built thanks to the cooperation between the Drapolicz Association and the Elbląg Forest District, specifically designed to conduct research on the migration of birds travelling across the Vistula Spit – one of the most important migration routes in Europe.
From 19 August to 16 November, every day between 7:00 and 15:00, systematic observations of four groups of birds are carried out here: birds of prey, falcons, pigeons and corvids. The collected data is sent to national monitoring databases and helps scientists track changes in populations and migration patterns.
The tower stands on a dune, above the treetops. Its platform offers a view of the Vistula Lagoon and the Baltic Sea (or, more precisely, the Gulf of Gdańsk, for geography enthusiasts). It is a place where it is easy to find peace and quiet – you cannot hear the city, there is no rush or distractions.
Many visitors say that this is where they truly relax – all you need to do is sit down, look around and let nature work its magic.
The Drapolicz Association – people, passion and almost two decades on the Spit
The Drapolicz Association has been operating on the Vistula Spit for almost 20 years. From the outset, its aim has been to promote knowledge about birds, conduct ornithological research and protect their habitats.
Thanks to the work of members and volunteers, permanent observation points were established here, which over time became an important element of nature education and ecological tourism in the region.
Anyone can become part of this project – join in on site during the observation or support Drapolicz's activities through the BuyCoffee platform.
Daily reports from the tower and the Marine Station can be followed on Drapolicz's Facebook and Instagram pages, where information about flights and interesting species is published on an ongoing basis.
It is a community that passionately observes nature and shows that contact with nature can be the best way to regain balance.
