Seabird observation point – Krynica Morska

Drapolicz – a place where learning meets the tranquillity of nature

On the Vistula Spit, in Krynica Morska, there are two unique places that combine science, education and contact with nature. Drapolicz Association has been conducting research on bird migration here for years, while also creating a space for rest, learning and mindful engagement with nature. These are places that attract not only ornithologists, but also anyone looking for a moment of peace, fresh air and distance from everyday life.

  • 1. Drapolicz Marine Point – observations, education and proximity to the elements

On the dunes by the sea, at entrance no. 18 in Krynica Morska, near Pirate Mountain, there is the Drapolicz seabird observation point – the first permanent seabird observation point in Poland.
It was created as part of a project by the Drapolicz Association, thanks to cooperation with Budimex S.A., the Elbląg Forest District, the Municipality of Krynica Morska, the Maritime Office in Gdynia and many other institutions that supported the development of this unique undertaking.

The purpose of the Station is to monitor the migration of seabirds, conducted annually from 1 July to 31 October, between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Observations cover all species associated with the Baltic Sea – gulls, divers, grebes, waders and others. The data collected at the station is sent to scientific databases and allows changes in the populations of sea-related species to be tracked.

The centre also serves an educational purpose. Anyone can come here, see what the observers do and try their hand at observing. Telescopes, binoculars and educational materials are available on site for visitors to use.

It is also a unique place during storms – you can conduct so-called seawatching, i.e. observing seabirds over the rolling Baltic Sea. On such days, the Point can attract over a hundred people from all over Poland, who come together to look for rare species and enjoy being close to nature. The salty, iodine-rich air and the sound of the sea work better here than many relaxation sessions – it is a real rest for the mind and senses.

The Drapolicz Association – people, passion and almost two decades on the Spit

The Drapolicz Association has been operating on the Vistula Spit for almost 20 years. From the outset, its aim has been to promote knowledge about birds, conduct ornithological research and protect their habitats.
Thanks to the work of members and volunteers, permanent observation points were established here, which over time became an important element of nature education and ecological tourism in the region.

Anyone can become part of this project – join in on site during the observation or support Drapolicz's activities through the BuyCoffee platform.

Daily reports from the tower and the Marine Station can be followed on Drapolicz's Facebook and Instagram pages, where information about flights and interesting species is published on an ongoing basis.

It is a community that passionately observes nature and shows that contact with nature can be the best way to regain balance.
