Kartuzy Bathing Area

Municipal swimming pool on the Lake Klasztorne Duże

Description of the place and its health benefits

The municipal swimming pool in Kartuzy is a unique ecological and health project in Poland, symbolizing the return of the Kashubian capital to its pre-war resort traditions. Thanks to the innovative, comprehensive reclamation of four local lakes, the water in the reservoir has regained its biological purity. A unique forest-lake microclimate is found here, promoting mental well-being and physical health. The surrounding dense beech forest and proximity to clean water create an ideal environment for the regeneration of the respiratory and nervous systems.

Health-promoting and recreational activities

Water activities

  • Recreational and health baths: Safe, lifeguarded swimming area (open seasonally from July 1st to August 31st, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM). The water is characterized by high clarity and excellent microbiological parameters.
  • Water tourism: A modern water sports equipment rental shop is located on-site, offering stable pedal boats and kayaks. This activity engages key muscle groups and supports cardiorespiratory fitness without excessive joint strain.

Physical activities and terrain therapies

  • Forest health trails (Silvotherapy and jogging): Shaded, natural walking trails near the shoreline, running through a beech forest with a gravel and dirt surface. Ideal for Nordic walking, jogging, and regenerative runs in conditions of increased forest phytoncide production.
  • Health Promenade: A modern, wide pedestrian and bicycle path with small architectural elements, connecting the forest zone with the beach infrastructure.

Social activities and relaxation (Mindfulness)

  • Innovative pyramid bridge: An impressive wooden structure in the shape of a stepped pyramid, jutting out into the lake's surface, it serves as a giant solarium, a space for yoga sessions, meditation, and breathing exercises, and as an amphitheater for health-promoting outdoor events.
  • Amphitheatrical recreation area: A specially designed terraced slope with numerous wooden seats and benches nestled within a well-maintained green space provides excellent exposure to sunlight (vitamin D3 synthesis) and comfortable relaxation with panoramic views of the reservoir.

Infrastructure and amenities

The facility's infrastructure, worth over PLN 12 million, was designed with accessibility and user comfort in mind:

  • Sanitary facilities: Basic mobile toilets (including a dedicated toilet adapted for people with disabilities) are located directly on the forest walking path. Additionally, a permanent beach maintenance building offers a modern, full bathroom, and a full-fledged toilet is available for patrons of the nearby café.
  • Food court: a modern building integrated into the slope with a café, restaurant and viewing terrace at the top of the hill, serving drinks and balanced snacks to facilitate regeneration after training, along with a toilet.
  • Security and organization: Designated swimming areas with a visible buoy system (zone for swimmers and non-swimmers), a lifeboat slip and professional stations for lifeguards.
  • Cycling infrastructure: Safe bicycle racks located within the promenade and easy access via dedicated city paths.

Historical and ecological curiosities

  • Historic return of the resort: Kartuzy was a valued tourist and health destination during the interwar period. The reopening of this facility, after a decades-long hiatus, officially re-establishes the town's tradition.
  • Ecological miracle: Lake Klasztorne Duże has struggled with severe pollution for decades. The project to fully purify it using chemical and biological methods (binding phosphorus in bottom sediments) is considered one of the most spectacular aquatic environmental protection projects in Central Europe.
